Oral Teachings: An Instructional Approach Through Kagan

Presenters:Patricia Johnson & Cassie Raye

First Nations teachings and histories are built on oral narratives. Our language and our beliefs start with language. As we fast forward to current times our students require oral teachings and learning more than ever to build language fluency, critical thinking skills and concept acquisition. This is one instructional approach that is built of Indigenous belief systems-that involves the use of our voice and thoughts.

Kagan is a constructivist and facilitates cooperative learning which assists in boosting academics, closing the achievement gap, improving student relations, and to create a more kind and caring school community. It is a way to get students to begin to take part in oral dialogues with one another and deepen their understanding.
