Additional Information:

The Health Care Aide/ Education Assistant will be required to assist the teachers carry out the educational mission of MESC and who make the educational experiences of children more rewarding. The unique nature of this role also requires care of a student’s medical or physical wellbeing which may include assisting with self care, personal hygiene, medication administration, and assisting with physical or occupational therapy under the direction of a certified Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist.  Health Care Aide/Education Assistants are under the direction of the Principals of the school they are assigned to and they are also required to report to the Assistant Principal and Teacher.

The Educational Assistant is responsible to the Principal.

The Educational Assistant will have specific responsibilities for:

  1. Health Care Aide/Education Assistants are assigned to work with a student or group of students to deliver activities that reinforce and advance their educational program.
  2. Work with students who may have complex or medical needs including hands-on personal care. These may include medical, or physical needs throughout the day such as support in feeding, toileting, and personal hygiene.
  3. Administer medication as required under the guidance of a medical management plan approved by a medical professional and parent/guardian
  4. Assist in exercises or treatments provided by occupational therapist or physical therapist on a regular basis
  5. Keep notes on treatment progress and observations to be reviewed by teacher, and therapist
  6. Work directly with students on education and wellbeing goals as directed by the Teacher.
  7. Prepare required educational and self care materials.
  8. Observe student behaviour and provide information to the Teacher.
  9. Review and prepare all documents, reports as required by the Teacher.
  10. Assist the Teacher determine course of action for students
  11. Maintain a high level of confidentiality in all interactions.
  12. Meet regularly with the Teacher and other professionals to discuss student progress and learning needs.
  13. Assist in preparing materials, creating displays, and undertaking other supportive activities.
  14. Work within established structures, including classroom management structures, behavioural rules, and Individual Program Plan and Behaviour Plan expectations.
  15. Clarify elements of the lesson for students who are having trouble.
  16. Supervise reinforcement activities.
  17. Implement specific techniques, strategies, and language as directed by the Teacher.
  18. Collect data for use in student evaluation.
  19. Mark objective tests for the Teacher to review.
  20. Report to Teachers on students’ strengths, achievements and needs.
  21. Report to Teachers on observed student behaviours and outcomes.
  22. May be required to supervise students. 

Additional Responsibilities  

  1. Performs other duties assigned by the school principal
  2. Keep up to date on school, district and relevant policies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Health Care Aide Certificate or equivalent
  • Experience working with children
  • First Aid Certification

  • Excellent writing skills, including proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Superior time management skills, multitasking skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Knowledge computers, ipads, whiteboards and other school resource material.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, must be able to talk to parents regarding their children.
  • Strong verbal skills to communicate with all levels of the management team.
