$37,752-$46,350

Hours Per Week:

40 hours per week plus overtime as required. 

Additional Information:

The Cultural Advisor is primarily responsible for providing support to students in increasing their cultural understanding and developing strong cultural identities through education on history, traditions, and language. Reporting to the Principal, this position is expected to help link MESC to local communities in order to bring cultural learning opportunities to students. The Cultural Advisor is also a key role model for students and staff.

As a leader in the organization the Cultural Advisor will model the intent of the Maskwacis Declaration on Education and the core values of; Wahkotowin, Iyiniw Mamotohnehickikan, Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin, and Nehiyawewin. This is evident by:

  • Ensuring that decisions are made to the ultimate benefit of Maskwacis students.
  • Assisting the Superintendent and the Board to ensure that all students benefit from their Treaty right to a quality education.
  • Respecting Cree language, spirituality and traditions within the Education Authority.
  • Providing Maskwacis leadership (the Cree way) in all matters relating to education in the Maskwacis Schools - consensus building, creating dialogue with stakeholders, empowering leadership in the system.

Responsibilities

The Cultural Advisor is responsible to the Principal.

The Cultural Advisor will have specific responsibilities for:

  1. Promoting cultural learning 
    1. Support in increasing cultural understanding and developing strong cultural identities through education on history, traditions, and language.
    2. Coordinate activities and events (including awareness campaigns), and provide guidance and assist in the development of opportunities and resources.
    3. Support/provide cultural knowledge and expertise in the school cultural programs, such as rites of passage, smudging, and storytelling.
    4. Promote and prioritize Indigenous knowledge.
    5. Provide guidance and ensure that Cree language and culture is a priority.
  2. Linking MESC with local communities and cultural learning opportunities
    1. Work in collaboration with other Cultural Advisors to deliver land-based and cultural programming.
    2. Ensure developing strong social relationships and are provided with opportunities to develop ties with their community and the school community.
  3. Serving as a role model
    1. Act as a role model for staff, students, and communities.
    2. Be open and receptive to student and staff enquiries regarding Indigenous knowledge and opportunities for learning.
  4. Additional Responsibilities  
    1. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • Although there are no educational or age requirements, it is understood that the Cultural Advisor shall be recognized as an Elder within his/her Nation/community.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal children, youth, and families.
  • Must produce a clear criminal record check and a child intervention check.

Working Conditions

  • Busy classroom setting.
  • Interacts with students at large.
  • Interacts with students, teachers, administration, family members, visitors, government agencies and personnel under all circumstances.
  • Manual dexterity required to use a desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Expected to work outside of regular work hours as required.
