The Cook is primarily responsible for preparing and serving students healthy, fresh, and well-balanced meals. This position will ensure consistent food preparation along with proper storage and retention of food in accordance with appropriate guidelines. An essential aspect of the Cook’s responsibilities is maintaining a healthy and safe kitchen by ensuring compliance with governmental, legislative, and other guidelines.

As an employee in the organization, you will model the intent of the Maskwacis Declaration on Education and the core values of Wahkotowin, Iyiniw Mamotohnehickikan, Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin, and Nehiyawewin.

The Cook is responsible to the Foods Services Supervisor.

The Cook will have specific responsibilities for:

  1. Prepare meals
    1. Prepare and serve healthy, fresh, and well-balanced meals in compliance with MESC’s health and nutritional plan.
    2. Ensure and provide consistent food preparation and the highest calibre of food presentation.
    3. Follow the menu as written by the Director of Food Services. Seek approval from the Director of Food Services if changes to the menu are needed.
  2. Safely storage and retain food
    1. Ensure food is stored in appropriate containers, labeled, and rotated to ensure high standards of freshness, minimize waste, and maximize quality. 
    2. Maintain daily production records, temperature logs, and other spreadsheets.
    3. Uphold standards of practice in inventory procedures.
    4. Ensure refrigerators and storerooms are organized and maintained in the various kitchen areas on a daily basis and that all food products are stored in accordance with provincial regulations.
  3. Maintain a healthy and safe kitchen
    1. Ensure compliance with local health department food service regulations.
    2. Maintain safe food handling procedures.
    3. Ensure cleanliness and hygiene is maintained in the various kitchen areas, including refrigerators and storerooms, and that food products are rotated to ensure high standards of freshness.
    4. Strive to uphold a safe working environment, healthy and safety conscious, and actively involved in maintaining and improving a safe work environment.
    5. Practice proper grooming, personal hygiene, and uniform standards.
  4. Additional responsibilities  
    1. Complete assigned side duties and work duties within a timely manner, meeting required deadlines.
    2. Assist with special events as directed by the Director of Food Services
    3. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • Professional certificates in food services required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of cooking experience required.

Working Conditions

  • Some travel may be required.
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
  • Ability to lift 60 lbs required.
  • Overtime as required.

A valid class 5 drivers licence and a clean driving abstract is preferred.
