Guided by MESC’s vision and mission, Maskwacîs Education Law, Maskwacîs Cree Declaration on Education and Natural Law, the Athletic Director (AD) is responsible for the administration and coordination of the Athletics and Physical Education (PE) program. This role involves managing school sports teams, intramural programs, athletic events, staff and coach coordination, and ensuring a positive and inclusive environment that supports student development.

As an employee in the organization, the Athletic Director will model the intent of the Maskwacîs Cree Declaration on Education and the core values of Wâhkôhtowin, Îyinîw Mâmitonehicikan, Nehiyaw Pimâtisiwin, and Nehiyawewin. This is evidenced by:

  • Ensuring that decisions are made to the ultimate benefit of Maskwacîs students;
  • Assisting the Superintendent and the board to ensure that all students benefit from their treaty right to quality education;
  • Respecting the Cree language, spirituality, and traditions within the Education Authority; and
  • Providing Maskwacîs leadership (the Cree way) in all matters relating to education in the Maskwacîs Schools: consensus building, creating dialogue with stakeholders, and empowering leadership in the system.

Responsibilities 

The Athletic Director is responsible to the Principal.

The Athletic Director duties include but are not limited to:

  1. The Athletic Director will be responsible for overseeing the Athletics and Physical Education (PE) program, which includes but is not limited to:
    1. Develop and coordinate all athletic and PE programming, including competitive school sports teams and intramural activities.
    2. Recruit, schedule, and support coaching staff for various school sports teams.
    3. Schedule practices, games, and tournaments, ensuring efficient use of facilities and alignment with the school calendar.
    4. Organize transportation logistics for all athletic teams and maintain a valid Class 4 driver’s license for student/team transport needs.
    5. Coach teams when necessary and appropriate.
    6. Manage the athletics and PE budget, including equipment purchases and event expenses, in alignment with school financial policies.
    7. Supervise student-athletes, promoting their academic and personal growth and overall well-being.
    8. Monitor and enforce academic eligibility standards and athletic codes of conduct.
    9. Promote school spirit by supporting and participating in athletic events and related community activities.
    10. Attend and host athletic events, including tournaments, games, and award ceremonies.
    11. As the school’s ambassador in all athletic-related activities and partnerships, maintain a professional and respectful demeanour.
    12. Foster an inclusive, respectful, and safe environment for all students, staff, and spectators.
    13. Address and resolve behavioural or disciplinary issues related to athletics or PE.
    14. Develop and enforce policies for gymnasium usage, team conduct, and overall athletic operations.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Management, Education, or a related field is required.
  • Additional equivalencies in sports programming are required.
  • Valid Class 4 driver’s license (or equivalent) is required or must be obtained within a specified timeframe.
  • First Aid and CPR certification is preferred.
  • Coaching certification(s) through recognized bodies are an asset.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in teaching PE or managing athletic programs.
  • Proven experience coaching sports teams at the school or community level.
  • Leadership experience in a school setting is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time position; may require extended hours, including evenings and weekends, to support events and tournaments.
  • Work will be performed in a combination of office, gymnasium, outdoor sports fields, and off-site locations for competitions.
  • May involve lifting and transporting equipment, driving school vehicles, and managing high-energy student environments.
  • Must be adaptable to changing schedules, weather conditions (for outdoor sports), and travel requirements.
