Summary

The Student  Advisor implements  group, and class/school-based support  to: promote students' personal and social development,  enhance students' academic achievement,  facilitate students' career decision-making,  coordinate linkages between families, the school and the community, and identify students at risk that require additional support.

Responsibilities

The Student Advisor is responsible to the School Principal. 

The Student Advisor duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Promote Students' Personal and Social Development
    1. Maintains a high level of knowledge regarding current and developing best practices in the field of student wellness, trauma-informed and restorative practices, and creating a safe school culture.
    2. The Student Advisor (SA) is responsible for the implementation of universal preventative programs within the school environment through classroom presentations and small group sessions.
    3. The SA will assist school staff in the regulation of students that are struggling within the learning environment.
    4. The SA will assist the home liaison and other relevant school staff in building connections with students that are not attending school regularly.
    5. The SA will work collaboratively with the School Counselor to identify students requiring one on one counseling.  
  2. Enhance Students' Academic Achievement
    1. The SA may collaborate with school staff, inclusion coaches, administrators to assist students in academic achievement.
    2. The SA may  assist students with navigating their classes, credit achievement and applications for secondary school.
    3. The SA may  attend collaborative meetings, Student Support Team Meetings, and other student focused meetings to provide additional universal support for students.
    4. The SA may  assist students in identifying goals that they would like to achieve in the future, including post secondary schooling and career decision-making.
  3. Coordinate Linkages between Families, the School and the Community
    1. Builds and maintains strong relationships with community Elders, cultural advisors and parents/guardians of students. 
    2. Supports students and parents/guardians in identifying, planning for, and accessing professional services to support student wellness needs.
    3. Fosters relationships and builds partnerships with community supports (hospitals and clinics, medical professionals, mental health and addictions, community agencies, LGTBQ+, RCMP School Resource Officers, etc.).
    4. Acts as an advocate for students and their families and is active within the school and community to increase education and awareness of health and wellness.
    5. Knowledgeable of community agencies, their mandates, and referral procedures.
    6. Assists in the referral and advocacy process for community based resources and outside agencies including Health Services and Mental Health.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in a related human services field.
  • Extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, families and social service agencies. 
  • Knowledge of emotional/behavioural disorders, special needs education, family violence, poverty, suicide prevention, addictions, bereavement and adolescent relationships.

Working Conditions

  • Interacts with students, family members, staff, government agencies, and personnel under all circumstances, which may include traumatic situations.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computers and peripherals.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting students.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Clean criminal record check including vulnerable sector clearance.
  • Knowledge of the Cree culture and the traditions of the local First Nations communities.
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Ability to work successfully with students with challenging behavior.
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills – ability to listen and build consensus with internal and external stakeholders, work effectively as part of a variety of teams.
  • Understanding of relevant policies, codes of practice, and awareness of relevant legislation.
  • Proven ability to organize, evaluate, communicate and present information, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality in all interactions.
  • First Aid qualification or skills preferred.
