Additional Information:
School Bus Drivers are responsible for safely transporting children to and from school on a daily basis and must be committed to providing superior service. Drivers need to possess strong written and oral communication skills to be able to interact with fellow drivers, operations staff, children, parents, and teachers. To be successful in the role, drivers must be self-motivated, enjoy working with children, and demonstrate patience, maturity, and a positive attitude at all times.

- Ensuring that decisions are made to the ultimate benefit of Maskwacis students;
- Assisting the Superintendent and the board to ensure that all students benefit from their treaty right to a quality education;
- Respecting the Cree language, spirituality, and traditions within the Education Authority; and
- Providing Maskwacis leadership (the Cree way) in all matters relating to education in the Maskwacis Schools: consensus building, creating dialogue with stakeholders, and empowering leadership in the system.
Responsibilities
The Bus Driver duties include but are not limited to:
- Drive safely and responsibly; be prepared for all road conditions while maintaining radio contact.
- Daily pre-trip and post-trip checks.
- Be on your bus and respond to dispatch on time.
- Manage passenger behavior by quickly and effectively solving disciplinary problems.
- Fuel the bus when required.
- Maintain a clean bus.
- Report mileage once a week and pickup applicable paperwork.
- Complete and submit DVCR (defect slip) and unit log book, as required.
- Bring the bus into the shop when requested by maintenance.
- Provide student counts at the end of each month.
- Attend required Safety Meetings during the year.
Qualifications
- Must possess and maintain a valid Alberta Class 2 Driver’s Licence, including Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) and/or Safety (S) , Endorsement Alberta Driver’s License (training provided).
- A minimum of 1 year of licenced driving experience in Alberta.
- At least 5 years’ licenced driving experience in Canada or abroad.
- Must maintain eligibility to be insured by MESC’s insurance provider without the Commission being charged an additional premium or surcharge. Failure to do so shall be a breach of contract and result in termination of employment with cause.
Working Conditions
- School bus drivers work approximately 190 days during the school year.
- Schools begin as early as late August and most finish by the end of June.
- Drivers are classified as 10 month employees and paid over 12 months.
- Driving a school bus involves working a split shift: about 1-3 hours in the morning and the same in the afternoon.
